[00:01:44] Now, here are your hosts, Kim Pesci and Katie Heinrich. Hi, I'm Kim Pesci, and Katie couldn't be with me today, so I've invited our good friend Joe Thorderson to pinch hit for Katie and to talk about our faith and get a male perspective for once. Okay. Thanks for coming in, Joe. Although, I'm never really shy about sharing my perspective, but no, it's good to, I hope Katie's doing something, you know, interesting or exciting.
[00:02:13] Yeah, she's really busy at work, and I forgot over the weekend, we went and got our nails done, and she told me she had a big work project going on, so I'm sure that that kind of stole her time today. Yeah, okay. All right, well, hey, I'm happy to jump in. But it might, actually, when you told me about what we're going to discuss, I actually think this might be valuable. Yeah, I hope so. Getting a male perspective and the father and mother perspective, the parent, you know, I don't know. Yeah, absolutely.
[00:02:43] And so, did you have a good week? How was your mass this weekend? Oh, I had a, I don't know, shoot, now you're putting me on the spot, because Father Clark, you know, Father Clark over at Holy Rosary, he's an interesting priest. He's really, he's, I love his homilies, and I always feel like I get something out of, like, I always sort of learn something, but he's also got kind of a dry wit, too, so I don't know. But he's got a good deliverer.
[00:03:08] When we come back from the break, I'll try to remember the thing that kind of had me cracking up at his homily. But anyway, whatever. Well, and I've heard he's super knowledgeable, because he was at OLPH before I was there, so a lot of our prisoners think of him fondly. He's a good dude. Yeah. Yeah. So, what I wanted to talk about today, and it's because we have one coming up at OLPH, and I'm sure that there are others around the diocese, but a healing holy hour. That's the topic. Ah.
[00:03:38] So, have you heard of a healing holy hour? Yeah, because didn't Father Geo do, I mean, I know we do. We do healing masses. Yep. And a holy hour is an hour of adoration, kind of dedicated specifically to healing, and a mass, a healing mass is a mass dedicated specifically to healing. So, a little different, but same concept of going to Jesus and saying, you know, I need healing. And so, I guess the first thing to talk about would be kind of what is your take on who needs to be healed?
[00:04:07] Because I think sometimes we have a misconception that that's only physical healing. Like, you've got to have cancer or, you know, have lost use of your limbs or something like that to have any kind of a miraculous healing or any type of healing at all. And it's not, you know, physical is just one type of healing. Right. Yeah, I don't know. I mean, it's funny because I don't even think of that first and foremost anyway. I just think all of us have, I mean, let's just be honest, you know.
[00:04:36] I know I may not say this very often, Kim, but I've got a lot of problems. I could use some healing. Yeah, exactly. Mostly they're internal, though. Physically, I feel pretty good, but yeah. Yeah, and I mean, and I think that that's something that if you hear about one or you see something in your bulletin and you think, oh, that's just for a specific group of people, that it is time to kind of look inward and think about those things that might need healing. And sometimes that's uncomfortable.
[00:05:04] I mean, that's sometimes kind of how I would compare getting ready for confession is like there's this sin, but then there's also this need to confess the sin because that's going to help heal whatever is causing the sin to happen. Okay, now that's a good point, Kim, because, you know, somebody listening might say, well, I don't know if I want to go to this. You're not having to lay out all your problems to everybody. It's silent, right? Yeah, 100%. And you might be going for someone else, too.
[00:05:33] I mean, to pray for someone else's healing. Maybe somebody in your life's got some problems and they're not addressing them. Yeah. Yeah, and so, I mean, I guess I want to explain exactly what a healing holy hour is because I think sometimes when you, the unknown is scarier than if you know what to expect, it's a little easier to approach something. And so, like I said, it's adoration. And in the Catholic Church, we believe in the true presence of Christ in the Eucharist.
[00:05:59] And so, the host is exposed in a monstrance is the name of it. It's a big golden piece of, what would you call that? Yeah, I mean, yeah. Golden hardware that holds the host. Right. And usually, it's, you know, dark inside the church and there's candlelight and it's just really beautiful.
[00:06:18] And so, you go in and instead of, like, if you go to just to a normal hour of adoration, it's usually just a few people who've signed up for that hour and you are there just to pray in silence, adore God, thank Him, whatever you're there to do. But in this case, there's going to be a meditation or several meditations that are led by a priest. There might be music.
[00:06:40] You know, they might bring the monstrance down and let everybody come up and just instead of receiving the Eucharist like you do at church, you just go and kind of have a moment before Christ. And it's pretty powerful. But I would say don't go in it with some expectation of that you're going to have some specific experience or something amazing is going to happen because that's kind of setting yourself up for disappointment. If that doesn't happen, it might happen. But mostly, it's just a healing thing.
[00:07:10] I mean, you go and you, the priest, at least in my experience, they've talked about specific things that need to be healed. And it's pretty general. You know, maybe they are inspired by the Holy Spirit during the service to say the different things that the congregation there is dealing with. But it's, you know, it's addiction. It's relationship problems. It's all sorts of things. And so I guess it'd be a good time to talk about, like, what are the different types of healing that a person might need?
[00:07:38] And so, like we said, there's the physical, but then there's also the spiritual. And, you know, so your relationship with God, if it's broken in any way, maybe you haven't been to confession in a while, maybe you've missed mass. So just kind of that kind of healing. There's the emotional type of healing that's needed sometimes. Yeah, I want to touch. I'm glad you mentioned that because it's funny. My wife and I were talking the other day about this. And I think sometimes we hear the term, I don't know, I need a mental health day.
[00:08:08] I don't think that's totally accurate. I think a lot of times what we're talking about is emotional health. Yeah, no doubt. And I don't want to sound all touchy-feely, but it's true. I think if our emotions are out of whack or if we're not addressing them or if we're, I don't know, they're just something that we don't really control. And especially if it's something from your past, if you're holding on to something that happened in your childhood or in a previous relationship or something in between you and anybody,
[00:08:34] that it can cause these emotional scars that if you don't get healing, then it can harden your heart. It can make you a bitter person. And who wants that? And burying them is the worst thing. And I'll be honest, as a father, I think probably a lot of us are guilty of that. You know, we feel like we can't show any weakness. We have to power through. We have to do our thing. And as a result, sometimes that takes a toll. So this sounds really appealing to me.
[00:09:02] You know what I like about this, Kim, is I don't know about you, but one of my biggest weaknesses, or I should just say, I don't know what it is. I guess it's a weakness. But one of the biggest issues I have, like it could be at Mass or at Adoration, is I just I'm easily distracted. Like I start, you know, I'm fully intending to participate and focus. And then five minutes in, I'm like, oh, wait, did I close the garage?
[00:09:31] Did I do just dumb things that have nothing to do with really anything? But I don't like that. This seems like it would keep you on track because. Yes. Yes. Because there's a little bit of silence. They're leading a meditation. Yes, exactly. And because it's not something that you talk about with people every day and that you, you know, like you said, men are not really encouraged to talk about these things. So to just get to have someone else lead the prayers and something, they're going to say something that's going to reach you because we're all going through something, like you said.
[00:10:01] It's funny, too, because you probably know how this is. Because it's you know what this reminds me of? It's I think you all have said this before about the notion of, I don't know, budgeting time or making a point on a point appointment. Yeah. Put it on your schedule. Something because how often have you ever said, OK, you know, oh, we got to go get lunch sometime to somebody or, oh, hey, I'll call you soon or something. And then it really never happens or no. And it's not because you don't like the person.
[00:10:30] It's just life gets in the way. So something like this, it's like, OK, well, you know, at some point I'll address my scars and my problems. Exactly. But first I got to get my job done. I got to get the laundry done. Yeah, exactly. But with something like this, it's like, OK, I can spare an hour. I'm going to do this. Yeah, I'll put it on my calendar. And yeah. And who doesn't need some sort of healing? Exactly.
[00:10:52] Because beyond spiritual and physical and emotional, you've got mental, like if you're dealing with grief or anxiety or just a whole host of other things. If you find yourself in a state of ingratitude a lot, you're constantly comparing yourself to others. Or I'm just trying to think of all the different things that can make you have just mental anguish that needs God's healing, needs his reminder that he made you uniquely. You're you're his and he has you here for a purpose.
[00:11:21] It's just it's nice to take an hour to remember that. Now, we've had healing masses, and I haven't been to one because I know they're always scheduled at a different like a time outside of the normal hours. Is there something similar like maybe during the homily? Do they lean more? I would think so. You know, I don't know. I remember we had we've had healing masses at OLPH, and I don't think I've been to a healing mass, whereas I have been to several healing holy hours. OK.
[00:11:50] So I can't speak intelligently about that. All right. It sounds cool, though. So you're saying this is and I hope we didn't miss it. Is it coming up? Yeah, we have one November 18th, which is a Wednesday at 7 p.m. in our main church, not in our chapel. It's in our main church. Oh, OK, cool. All right. Well, then I got to make sure I get to that. Yeah, absolutely. And so you've been listening to Light on the River with Kim and Joe sitting in for Katie. And we will be back after these messages.

You're listening to Light on the River with Kim. No Katie today, but we've got our friend Joe.
[00:13:24] And we've been talking about a healing holy hour, what it is, what to expect when you attend a healing holy hour. Because it's nice to know, kind of set expectations for what it will be like so that you're not uncomfortable. But also, you know, don't come with a big expectation of what the healing is going to look like. And I'll come back to that, put a pin in that. Because sometimes we ask for specific healing and God had something else in mind. And that's a good point.
[00:13:53] Yeah, we think we know what we need. Exactly. Yep. I wanted to say something, though, Kim. You know what you're reminding me of? Because you're saying, okay, so it's candle lit, which is cool. Yes. Music, like I'm guessing, it's some sort of, I'm sure it's appropriate music. Yeah, yeah. And I think it just depends on the priest and what music style they want to bring. I've been to ones where it's live music with, you know, that's modern.
[00:14:19] I've heard music that's very traditional and we've played recorded music even. Well, I think that whole experience, that makes a huge difference. When I was living, I lived in Phoenix for like six months. It was just this sort of temporary job that I did. And I will say there was one at the college, they had a Newman Center. And they, in the church, they did this candlelight mass. And it was real, it was like real dark in the church.
[00:14:49] And it was usually like, I don't know, like eight o'clock on a Sunday, eight at night. Yes. It was one of the coolest masses I've ever been to. And I always thought it was really neat because they had music. I don't even think you could read from your book. You just sort of just were in the moment. But man, it really makes an impact. Yeah. With the right lighting, the right, the right ambiance. Absolutely. This sounds perfect. Oh, it's so awesome. And we also were talking about the different kinds of healing.
[00:15:15] Sometimes people think of healing as being for only physical things and disease and illness and things like that. But we have spiritual healing needs, emotional healing. We've got mental healing. And we've talked about all of those, but we didn't talk yet about relationship healing. And I think that affects a lot of people, whether it's you and your parents, you and your kids, you and your spouse, you and your neighbor. There's so many relationships that get damaged as we live as human beings in this world.
[00:15:45] And so just coming to God with those needs. But I really wanted to get into like, you know, when Jesus lived on earth, he said, do you want to be healed? Like so many times to different people. Do you want to be healed? An interesting question. Like you would think it's like, of course we do. But no, I just like being blind and I like sitting here. Yeah. So it's like, but if we think about it, do we want to be healed? And he would kind of ask what needs healing? And it's interesting.
[00:16:12] Like if you got to be right in front of Jesus today, which is, I mean, if you're at a healing holy hour, you are right in front of Jesus. But if you were with Jesus while he's on earth and he said, do you want to be healed? What would you say? I mean, it's, I don't know that we always admit to ourselves what needs to be healed. We just keep chugging along. Like you said, in the first segment, we just keep kind of just bury it. Well, you know what I'm thinking too, if nothing else, if you go, well, I really don't need to go to this holy hour. I'm pretty solid. Everything, you know? Okay.
[00:16:42] Well, for one thing, you're pretty naive because all of us have, but what I'm thinking is maybe you just go to the, to this healing holy hour with an open mind and just see what it brings you. And you might realize after listening, wow, I really do need to address this one thing, or I need to talk to this one person, or I need to fix this thing about my personality or something. So it might just give you the, the insight you need. Yeah. You know, Jesus isn't going to waste your time either. Never. And I'm, and you're not going to be bored at something like this.
[00:17:11] It goes by really fast and, um, and you don't have to go like and profess your, what needs healing. It's not like a, you're not speaking unless you're just participating in a particular prayer, but for the most part, you're there to kind of relax and be healed. And, um, I got a question. Yeah. You know, I have a logistical mind, Kim. So OLPH, I mean, I, you guys, I'm sure that church seats four or 500 people, right? At least. Yes. I think we've had 600.
[00:17:37] So I guess what I'm wondering is, is this something you'd come in and do people kind of mill around a certain area or is it, can you spread out? Sometimes I like to be a little bit more off on my own if I'm in adoration. I mean, you can, you can sit where you want. And for the most part, it does seem like everyone sits in the two center. Yeah. Because that's the center. But I mean, yeah, you could sit on the sides. We've got one of the more modern layouts. So that might be appealing for people too. Yeah.
[00:18:05] But you wouldn't get that direct sight line of the monstrance. And we have this really cool monstrance that's, that lights up. It's just. Oh, I've seen. Yeah. I've seen pictures. It's humongous and it has requires a humongous host. It's really, it's really something to see. I shouldn't give it all away. I should let it be a surprise. I'm a big believer in lighting. Lighting is a big deal. Yeah. Like to get it right. And especially you can't really beat candle, a candle lit church with the dim lighting and good music. I mean, that's about as cool as it gets.
[00:18:34] I totally agree. And, you know, just back to the, the, what needs healing and what you asked Jesus to heal. I think that you said it right. Come with an open mind because some, so many times you're praying and you, you know, if you're having a difficulty with a relationship, you want this A, B, and C to happen because you want your way. You want everything to work out the way you thought it should work out. And you want that person to apologize. And you don't really want to, you don't really want to transform or change. You want them to.
[00:19:00] And so sometimes you realize when you're going through these healing processes that, you know, you, you have some work to do. Yeah. Well, you might show up and you've got your list. It's like, okay, I need to, I need, I need to pray for these people. But then maybe by the end of this, you're like, wow, I didn't even realize what is that? That, you know, you see the splinter in your neighbor's eye without seeing the beam in your own eye. Exactly. Exactly. And I think too, you know, there's so many options out there for healing now.
[00:19:29] And not to say that there's not value in those options, but I just think Christ, and it might be that, that he sends you the right doctor or he sends you the right friend or the right, you know, circumstance to be healed. The inspiration to stop doing something that's harmful to you or whatever. But it's just, it's, it's a, it's a good perspective to have a Catholic perspective on what it looks like to be healed. And sometimes you don't get healed.
[00:19:55] And that's another lesson, you know, in this crazy world we live in that you're, God is calling you to persevere through something you're going through. Well, I'd be amazed if anything happened instantly. It usually doesn't, but, um, but you, you might get some instant insight, which that's just as important. Absolutely. And then, you know, it's not a one way street. You've got to, maybe, maybe you've been given, maybe, maybe the gift you get for this healing
[00:20:21] hour is just some, um, new ideas and new insight, but then you got to go take action too, to, to address things. He doesn't just fix it for you. That's right. So it sounds really cool. You know what it's reminding me of? Do you know? Um, I don't know what you call these, but the, there's the stairs. I think there's 30, I can't remember. I think there's 30 something of them, but, um, that, um, St. Helen don't miss if, if somebody,
[00:20:46] if, if I'm misquoting whatever, but I think I want to say it was St. Helen found, um, I think she found the original cross and then she found the stairs where, where Pilate was standing, where Jesus was condemned basically and brought everything back to Rome. And so they have a devotion these days where you, you go up the stairs on your knees. And what I was told is that you, at every stair level, you reflect on a, on a period of your life. Oh, wow.
[00:21:14] I think I've talked to someone who's been to these stairs and did it. If have you ever, when's the last time you reflected on being 14 years old or being, you know, that's really useful. I think so. But when would you ever do that? Unless you had a, unless you had an opportunity like this where it's like, okay, I am going to focus on this. And they say it, it transforms people. It's like, wow. You know, by the time you get to the top and everything, plus you're in pain, which that's always insightful too.
[00:21:43] But this reminds me a lot of that. It's like, you're, you're focusing, you're, you're taking the time to focus on something important that you probably never really want to focus on. You don't make time to, because we're all so, so busy, you know, whose, whose brainchild was this? This sounds like it's got a father Jolly or father Gio's fingerprints on it. You know, I mean, we've been doing them and I know, like you said, Holy Rosary was doing them. I don't know if it's like, I don't remember.
[00:22:09] I maybe wasn't in tune with all the goings on at the church before I got a little bit more on fire about my faith. So I hate to say they, it's not been being done, but I, I wasn't aware of the healing holy hours and the healing holy masses and all of that until, you know, the last 10 years. Yeah. Well, did we give the date out? November 18th at 7 PM at OLPH in the main church. And, you know, I mean, we, we do the things that we do at OLPH for our parishioners and
[00:22:37] with hopes that, you know, all the parishes are doing this, but of course anybody would be welcome, you know, but I think that if, if you're, if it's not happening at your parish, then it's something to have a conversation with your pastor about because, you know. It's November 18th. It's a Wednesday. Oh, okay. Yeah. It seems like Wednesday's the day for this usually. So, okay. I don't know. The midweek faith lift. I didn't coin that word, but I love it. I love it. Okay. You, I wouldn't, who came up with that one?
[00:23:06] It's not my favorite quote. Well, no, it was somebody I know as a friend. So, um, it was when we were doing Wednesday night things and she called it, I thought that was cute. I wanted to share something with you since we're talking about this. So, well, I want to get your, I want to, I want to get something from you, you know, in terms of, uh, one of your, I don't know, cause you like to go to adoration, right? So has there ever been a moment that maybe sticks out in your head when you go to adoration? Cause I had a really interesting one about a month ago, but.
[00:23:36] Yeah. I mean, I, I usually, it's not during adoration, but it's after whatever I'm thinking about during adoration, whether, like I said, it's, it's coming up with something I'm like some letter I'm going to send email. I'm going to send conversation. I'm going to have, and then you spend an hour with Jesus. I don't usually try to think about whatever the issue is while I'm there because I have these like 10 minutes, this 10 minutes, that like gratitude prayer, just something that
[00:24:05] I learned about having a good Holy hour or whatever. And, um, but then when I come out of it is usually when it's like, ah, that's the idea I was waiting for. That was the, the inspiration I needed. And just, it'll, it'd be like. It's like a log jam comes out. Yes. Yes. Like no more writer's block. It's funny. It seems like that's the way adoration is. I get that too. Like it's, um, you go in with all this, whatever you want to say baggage, or you go in without
[00:24:33] any idea of what it is, you know, how to solve this issue or how to whatever. And suddenly it's just untangled, like right there. Like, oh, I just need to do this one thing, or I just need to think this one thing. Yeah. And it's not like a magic pill, like, you know, whatever problems you have, don't just magically go away, but to have the inspiration and the, the idea that feels like it's from the Holy spirit on how to move one step forward. Yeah. It's really nice. Well, I'll tell you what, so this happened, this was about a month ago.
[00:25:01] So I dropped by St. Louis church, which man, it now talk about lighting. If you go to St. Folks, if this is a little, uh, hidden gem here, if you, if you go to a St. Louis church at when I guess in between hours, you know, when it's open, but there's nothing going on. The lighting is beautiful in there. Have you ever gone in there? It's, there's this really nice glow. The overhead lights are off.
[00:25:28] My friend was just telling me she popped in at an odd hour and like the stained glass maybe is not lit. Right. And it's dark, but like the light is directly on the, on the monster. Oh man. The light, whoever designed the lighting hat hats off. Cause, uh, but what I was, what I was, you know, once again, I'm in Matt, I'm in, I'm in adoration by myself. First of all, I'll just be honest. Sometimes I get drowsy sitting there cause I had no time constraints. I could have hung out there for two hours if I want.
[00:25:54] So then the distractions start and suddenly I, I, I did this thing where I embraced it. And, uh, you know, so I'm saying, uh, you know, Lord, I'm sitting here and my leg hurts. I'm sitting here and, um, I'm thinking about this, but, and I just was basically honest about all this stuff. And then suddenly I kind of got that out of my system. And then all these neat insights came along and it, it just like by being honest instead
[00:26:24] of just, um, acting like whatever, it was really cool. And I'm like, okay, maybe he doesn't care that I'm wondering what the Cubs score, the, uh, the Cubs game was or something, but you know what I mean? And it's like, but it was, it was really cool. So I don't know, just brutal honesty was a unique kind of thing. Well, and I, and I love when you get kind of like your mind starts going down the correct right or what feels like the correct rabbit hole. And like you said, these insights come to you and you're like, it just doesn't feel like it's just you on your own thinking.
[00:26:53] It feels like it's coming from him. I almost got the impression of like, have you ever been with some, um, I'm sure you've seen this in a movie or something where it's like somebody's going on and they're laying out all their problems and they're talking to their friend and everything. And then the, the friend goes, okay, are you done? And then it's like, then they give them these pearls of wisdom and everything. And I kind of felt like that with it. It was like, okay, are you done? You got all, did you get that out of your system? Let me tell you a few things. I love that. Yeah.
[00:27:21] Well, and so, so now that we've talked about, you know, what to expect when you go and kind of what it is. And, um, I do think it's worth mentioning, um, how to prepare well for a holy hour, for a healing holy hour. So, um, so before you go, you want to prepare your heart, but you want to have the best experience possible. And so, um, you want to ask the Holy spirit to reveal what needs healing. And, um, that's really important because like we said earlier, you know, we, we don't always
[00:27:50] take time to think about that and we need to really kind of, it's great if you can get it in your mind and really have it at the front of your mind. Um, and then you need to name your wounds, whether you do that ahead of time or while you're in the adoration, the healing holy hour, but you, you know, really to God, not out loud to the congregation, but to God, name, name your wounds. Um, and then you can also bring someone else's needs. So if you have somebody that's really going through it or, you know, dealing with anything,
[00:28:20] then you can, you can pray for your spouse, your child, your friend. Um, and then come without expectation of a particular experience. So don't come in hoping that you're going to have this aha moment. But, um, I think always expect a lot of God because he's amazing and he can do miracles, but don't come in with a specific expectation is the better way to word that. Yeah. And then just be open to what God asks of you afterward. So like we were saying, it's not just that one hour.
[00:28:48] It's, it's the next, I mean, weeks, months, years. You don't know how long this will, it goes on. There's been times where I've gone to maybe a retreat or something like that, where there was a lot of prayer and it was months later that things just started to kind of flood into my mind of like, oh yeah, you know, I could see that. You gotta, you gotta be patient. And I'm thinking too, probably if it's, if you're talking about like, um, I don't know,
[00:29:12] some sort of a emotional issue or maybe a relationship issue that it'd be really important to go in there with like, okay, this isn't just my list of problems with, with this person. You gotta be really honest with yourself about, okay, well, here's where I dropped the ball and here's where I failed. Well, and I don't know my tendency with confession and things like this is to like, if I've already felt like I confessed it and got over it and went time without, I don't, and then it comes back.
[00:29:40] You just feel like, I've just let you down, God. Like I can't keep coming and whining about the same thing, but, but he, he already knows. So you're not, you're not bringing him any new information. Well, what do you think of this too? Because, um, I don't remember this. Maybe, maybe they had this when my kids were younger, but, uh, what do you think of going as a family or, uh, no, I think that's a fabulous idea. I think if your kids see you, you know. Yes. Yes.
[00:30:07] No, I mean, I think we should all be doing a lot more of that. And, and I think I kept my faith to myself for a really long time and I'm really regretting that with my big kids. And, but thankfully they can still see me live and I can still, and with Teresa, I just see her faith really growing. And there's all kinds of cool things we've talked about on the show, hallow apps and things geared towards kids. And it's just me making time to do it. I think that's it. I think you just said it right there. You just got to make, you got to budget the time and make it a priority.
[00:30:37] But in, in, uh, in fairness too, I, uh, hats off to, uh, uh, our lady of perpetual help for making, you know, for budgeting the time to put this on the regular calendar too. So we are, our diocesan priests and our, and our, and, um, our priests from India are amazing. Uh, it's just, it's great having them and all that they do for us, for their flocks. I'll tell you this folks. If you grew up here in Memphis, I say this all the time, Kim, but do not take this diocese for granted.
[00:31:05] I've lived in a lot of places and Memphis is, is, is definitely unique and not every diocese has these priorities. So we're fortunate for sure. Blessed. We're pretty, yeah, we're, we're definitely lucky. But, uh, you know, you've been listening to light on the river.
